I offer line editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
Line editing focuses on style: tightening sentence structure so the language is sharp and clear and examining word choice and syntax to set the overall tone. Copyediting focuses on mechanics: making sure grammar and punctuation are correct and the document follows the overall style guide. Finally, proofreading ensures all the little details are correct.
For a manuscript of 40,000 to 90,000 words, this is what the process looks like (I absolutely do shorter or longer works, too; we’ll just customize the process to fit both our needs):
Free sample edit: You’ll send up to 2,000 words (usually the first chapter) to me for a free sample edit. This will let you see my editing style and give me an idea of your writing style so we can make sure we’re a good fit.
The first pass: After I receive a 10% deposit, I’ll read your entire manuscript and note any questions I have or inconsistencies I see. This might be as major as a plot hole that needs to be fixed or as minor as how you prefer to spell the word gray. If there are any sections that need more comprehensive changes, I’ll let you know and give you suggestions about how to fix them. At this point, I’ll collect another 40% deposit (for a total of 50% down) and proceed with...
The editing pass: This is where the polishing happens. I’ll go through your manuscript line by line to ensure that your words read smoothly, your phrasing avoids awkwardness, and your grammar, spelling, and punctuation are all on point. I’ll also communicate regularly during this process (I generally send an email after completing every chapter, but we may adjust that if your chapters are longer or shorter than average).
This stage actually comprises at least one (and usually more than one) editing pass as well as a proofreading pass. This means I’ll be going through your words a minimum of three times to make sure everything is perfect.
Please note: If you choose to rewrite a section after I’ve edited it, I’ll complete one additional pass at no charge. Additional editing after that will incur an additional fee.
Manuscript return: After the editing is complete, I’ll format the manuscript to your specifications and, upon full payment of the invoice, return it to you.
My base rate is 1.3 cents/word. This may be adjusted if your writing is already very clean or if your manuscript will need extensive work, but this will be communicated to you before extensive work begins. Above all, I want you to know what to expect during this process.
